Discover how turning to Jesus in times of longing and restlessness can bring peace, as shared through a heartfelt mother-daughter conversation.
Today's Gospel: Luke 6:20-26
My eight-year-old daughter and I sat at the dinner table after everyone else had cleared out after our meal.
“Mommy,” she said through tears, “the thing is, I really want just one person who will call me a best friend like I call them a best friend. I have friends, but I want one person who would be just my best friend.”
”Oh darling,” I said, “I actually really know how that feels. I have felt that way too.”
The Holy Spirit provided this conversation for my daughter and me because, truthfully, I had recently felt the same way—wanting an intimacy and total understanding that no person this side of heaven could give me.
Isn’t there a place within each of us that longs to be loved and cherished? That thirsts for affection, affirmation, and acceptance? That wants to be satisfied, made at peace, and feel whole?
It can be hard to weep, to mourn, to thirst, to be hungry, to be restless, to be misunderstood. It can be so hard to feel these things that we (intentionally or not) try to find something to cling to or to fill the place within.
What if when we experience these things today, we instead turn our gaze toward Jesus? What if we whisper to Him, “Lord, this is hard to feel. I want to fill it with different things. Please help me instead to open the door of my heart to You and to trust that when I call out to You, You always come. I give you these longings, insecurities, and anxieties, and I trust You love me and long to be with me as my friend and Savior.”
Ponder:
When you feel restless or fearful, where do you turn first? How can you choose Jesus first today?
Pray:
Jesus, we open the doors of our hearts to You and trust You will enter with love and mercy.
Pray Together:
Find time this week to visit the Lord in Adoration. Ask Him to be your friend and speak truthfully to Him of what is on your heart and mind. Take time to listen.
