Reflection by Emily Davis

Today's Gospel: Luke 6:20-26

Did you ever notice that wealthy people sometimes hoard their money, whilst the poorest people share theirs? If you have ever lived in a poor country, it’s one of the best things to witness. The poor naturally help and love one another.

We live in a world of social media phoniness, where money and store-bought beauty are touted as the absolute pinnacle of success, and it’s scary. I’m so thankful I grew up without the Internet or social media. Because these days, many people only seem to feel good if they have it all.

God promises, throughout scripture, to give us what we need. If you think back on personal hardships, you will notice that He always has given what we need. But in our humanity, we sometimes try to hold onto possessions that aren’t the things God wants us to have. To be a good steward of your money, you have to give a large portion to the poor. To be a good steward of your body, you must exercise and eat right.

To be a good steward of your soul, you must study God’s word. God warns us about holding on too tightly to our money/possessions because they are temporary.

It is so hard to feel blessed when there are financial hardships, you are hungry, your marriage is strained, you are exhausted from caring for small children, or you live 5,000 miles away from friends and family, etc. I could go on forever with examples. However, what we need to remember is that the negative situations we walk through are temporary!

Living a good and holy life is about accepting our circumstances and making the best of them. Re-read this Gospel passage – those who have nothing will be given everything and those who have everything will lose it all.

Our goal is spending eternity with God.

Ponder:

It would not be easy to leave all your possessions behind and live life like disciples of biblical times. But what if I told you that Jesus has called you to share what you have with the poor and downtrodden? Will you? Do you?

Pray:

Dear Lord, only You can help me see how to best help others in Your name. Help me to remove anything in my life that keeps me from doing Your will, for the least of Your people. I pray, in Your holy name,
