Daily Gospel Reflection for September 20, 2026

Explore the generosity of God through the parable of the laborers, reflecting on mercy and grace for all, regardless of when they enter the faith.

Today's Gospel: Matthew 20:1-16a

As a convert, I was mostly on-board with God's generosity in today's parable of the laborers. After all, my conversion was thanks in part to those who had been laboring in the vineyard. Yet, I wondered about the last minute arrivals. Maybe they should receive a prorated wage.

Until, one day, God rearranged my thinking.

I was born into a pagan family, so naturally my parents were non-believers. Yet, I invited my parents to attend the service where I would come into the Catholic Church. Easter Vigil, where new members enter the Church, is the longest of Catholic liturgies. That, combined with my dad’s impatience for sitting through anything longer than ten minutes made the Easter Vigil memorable.

As I, along with the other newcomers got up, sat back down, knelt, prayed, then got back up, down, and around again, my dad grew more impatient and agitated. I wondered if I could fold myself in half and slide under the pew to escape his how-dare-you- put-me-through-this energy.

No one knew that less than ten years later, I would be standing at his deathbed desperately trying to get him to accept the sacrament he had grumped through because the thing took too long.

When I called a priest to baptize my dad, my dad sent the priest away. I placed everything in the Lord’s hands, because what else could I do? 

Then an odd thing happened. A few days later, he agreed to the baptism. Soon after, my dad passed away.

My dad didn't work the vineyard. There wasn't even time for a labor/wage agreement.

Each of us loves someone who desperately wants God's mercy poured out upon the one they love. God's generosity silences us from any jealous claims we may have had.

In what ways do you think the parable of the laborers is unfair?

Pray:

Dear Jesus, thank You for Your generosity to me and to those who have yet to accept Your grace in their lives. Help me to labor in the vineyard without comparison and grant us more laborers in the vineyard. Come, Holy Spirit!

Pray Together:

Pray for more laborers in God's vineyard, even if they be late or last-minute workers.
