Daily Gospel Reflection for September 30, 2026

Explore the challenging call to discipleship in Luke 9:57-62, reflecting on sacrifice and the importance of following Jesus wholeheartedly.

Today's Gospel: Luke 9:57-62

In today’s Gospel, three nameless disciples address Jesus, and the response He gives each of them is challenging. As I reflected on this passage, I imagined I was Mary Magdalene and had witnessed each of these interactions. What might her response have been?

In the first encounter, the nameless disciple says he will follow Jesus wherever He goes, and Jesus responds,

“Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.”

Mary, and any disciple who followed Jesus from town to town, probably nodded knowingly at this statement. Following Jesus meant they literally did not know where they were going to sleep each night.

The second nameless disciple insists on burying his father before following Jesus. Perhaps Mary Mary Magdalene felt sorrow for this man’s loss, but she already knew enough about Jesus to know following Him meant making sacrifices.

The third disciple merely wanted to say farewell to his family before following Jesus, but he was told,

“No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the Kingdom of God.”

As a woman who had been possessed by seven demons, Mary Magdalene had probably been deserted by her own family members. Jesus and His followers became her new family.

But what was the point of the three encounters? Following Jesus means leaving our old ways behind. Maybe that’s something we happily do (like Mary leaving behind the seven demons), but sometimes it can mean real sacrifice, even leaving behind things that seem good.

Ponder:

Is there anything or anyone in my life that is keeping me from giving Jesus my whole heart?

Pray:

Lord, help me to practice a spirit of detachment so that I can easily let go of anything that is keeping me from following You wholeheartedly.

Make a quick list of your activities from today. Are any of them things that kept you from spending time in prayer with Jesus?
