Reflect on the gifts God has given your family and how to use them for His kingdom. Discover the importance of stewardship in daily life.

Today's Gospel: Matthew 21:33-43

This is one of those unapologetic tough love parables in the Gospel. I always seem to come across this passage when I’m coasting through my days without intention. I’ve allowed the frantic schedules and demands of work and parenthood to drag me along. I’m not setting boundaries around my time and especially not around the time I need to spend in relationship with Jesus. I’ve forgotten that I need prayer just as much as I need air.

In this parable, the landowner went out of his way to set his tenants up for success: “[He] planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a tower.” Sounds like they’ve got everything they need for a productive season. Apparently, they did everything except take advantage of the tools they had been given and now they have nothing to show for harvest.

The Lord gives each of us a set of gifts and talents. When used properly, these gifts fill our lives with purpose and joy and serve His Church. He also gave us free will, and we get to decide if we will be good stewards of these gifts. He is a good Father who freely gives and then gives us space in hopes that we’ll flourish.

We get to teach our kids how to be good stewards of these gifts as well. These gifts have the ultimate purpose of serving God’s kingdom and bringing as many people to know Him as possible. As this parable points out, He won’t let us squander these gifts, He’ll allow someone else to step up to the plate. Our children’s generation can be the one that steps up to the plate for His kingdom and does beautiful things—and we are appointed as the shepherds to help them.

Ponder:

What are the gifts and talents God has given each person in my family? What are the obstacles each person faces in producing good fruit?

Pray:

Lord, may we never squander or take for granted the gifts You’ve given us. May we see it as pure joy to use them to Your kingdom's benefit.

Pray Together:

Charisms are special gifts of the Holy Spirit to empower the Church and for Christians to serve others. When discerning a charism, a good indicator is that it’s a quality others have pointed out to you. As a family, discuss what charisms (or special gifts) you see in each other.
