Today's Gospel: Luke 10:25-37

During the early days of dating my now-husband, I often asked him hypothetical questions to get to know him better. One day I asked him, “If Jesus appeared in front of you right now and said He would answer any one question, what would you ask Him?”

Chris replied, “I would ask: ‘What must I do to inherit eternal life?’”

At first, it seemed like a strange question to me. Didn’t someone already ask Our Lord this very question? Don’t we already have the answer?

But now I understand what my husband meant. Our Lord’s response is far from simple. We each struggle in different ways with loving God and our neighbor in our daily life.

Love God with all your heart. Do I put God first above every other thing and above every person—including even my spouse and children? Do I love God in the people I find irritating or who have hurt me? Do I tell God every day that I love Him, and do I ask Him to help me love Him more?

Love God with all your being. Is there a part of my heart that I hide from God? Do I have wounds I’m too scared or ashamed to show Him? Do I relegate God to certain moments of my day and forget about Him the rest of the time?

Love God with all your strength. Am I lukewarm in my prayer? Do I easily become distracted at Mass? Am I willing to lay down my life for God?

Love God with all your mind. What am I doing today to grow in my knowledge of God? Do I read God’s Word daily as well as some spiritual book? How well do I really know my faith?

Ponder:

I will likely come across someone today who is hurting in some way. Will I cross over to the other side to avoid this person? Or, instead, what act of mercy will I extend to him or her?

Pray:

God Who is Love itself, help me to love like You.
