Today's Gospel: Luke 11:29-32
There is a saying attributed to several different people: “For those who believe in God no explanation is necessary. For those who do not believe in God no explanation is possible.”
Jesus did present signs of His majesty and might, but for those who did not have faith, including Pharisees and chief priests, no sign that Jesus would give was enough or would convince them that He was the Son of God. Not even His Resurrection.
We see a similar phenomenon in our day as well. There are people who will not believe no matter what explanation is given or what proof they have. On the other hand, there are people who steadfastly believe no matter how others may argue against God.
I think one difference lies in whether we see with human eyes or with eyes of faith. Human explanation will never explain God and will fall short of proving His existence. But eyes of faith see differently. The proof is not in human explanations. For those who believe, all of creation bears witness to God’s existence and presence with us. Our prayer and the experience of the heart bear witness as well.
However, even for those of us who have faith, sometimes a sign would be very welcome. During confusing times, I would appreciate a sign as to what I should do or whether I am on the right path. During difficult times, I would love for our Lord to show to me definitively that He is there. Sometimes we receive such a sign or a bit of consolation, but often we don’t.
In times when we don’t, it stretches our faith, and faith eventually grows as a result. “No sign will be given,” because no sign is necessary. Faith is faith. Jesus is God.
Ponder:
Have I been able to put my faith and trust in God when no signs or consolations are given to me? What steps can I take to express my love for Him even when I have no clear signs of His presence?
Pray:
You say, Lord, that signs will not be given. Though I’d like You to give me signs every so often, I don’t want my faith to be based only on outward explanations or proofs. I want a faith and a love for You that are deeper than that. Please deepen my faith and love.
