Today's Gospel: Luke 12:1-7

In my undergraduate years, I was often asked my stance on any number of issues and beliefs and being very principled and fearless, I gave it without reservation. That is, until my answer was used against me by a professor who held the opposing viewpoint. Licking my wounds, I was determined to prove that this was indeed the case and signed up for a second course with the same professor. Only this time, I told him that I was keeping an open mind and ready to be convinced. While I fared well in this course, proving my earlier assumptions, I felt like I lost something valuable for I was no longer true to my authentic self.

This passage in Luke cautions us not to live a life of pretense and hypocrisy. For God calls us all into an authentic relationship with Him, and nothing misses his sight. Our propensity to please others and achieve success in this world is indeed a constant challenge. In doing this, however, we often lose our sense of purpose and direction and deep within we know that this way of thinking is wrong. For, if we are trying to please the world, we have lost before we ever begin. We risk compromising our values, and in the process lose more than we ever thought possible. Swayed and tossed about by the opinions and example of others, our call to witness can even be overshadowed by this desire to fit in. Consequently, we may become more comfortable with this way than the light of Christ, even rejecting being shown the error of our ways. Yet our Father, Who knows each of us intimately, calls us to live an authentic transformed life. This means consciously choosing a radically different path.

Ponder:

What is the danger in my faith becoming one of pretense, and what are the habits that are keeping me from living my faith out in this world?

Pray:

Lord, choosing to follow You entails more than professing my love. It requires that I take the step of renewing my commitment to this life You desire for me. Where I am resistant, please, Lord, help light the way and fit me to Your will and purpose.
