Explore how your daily choices shape your eternal destiny in this reflection on Luke 12:1-7. Embrace kindness and trust in God for a fulfilling life.
Today's Gospel: Luke 12:1-7
God loves you. He intimately knows you in both body and soul. He truly cares deeply for you. You are so special that you have been created for eternal living. You will never cease to exist. Yet, the choice of your eternal destination largely remains in your hands. Through your daily actions, you step closer to heaven or hell. The big and little choices help direct the way.
The most telling actions are the ones you express “behind closed doors.” (Luke 12:3) How do you behave with your immediate family and closest friends? Are you prone to gossip and jealousy? Do you find yourself falling into complaining? Do you harbor resentment? Do you tame your tongue with words of kindness and gentle speech? Do you react to your children with impatience and anger? Most importantly, would you behave the same way in public? If not, it may be time to prayerfully work on these private vices, seeking instead the counterpart virtues. Continue to seek the sacrament of Penance too. Your family with be impacted by whatever daily example you choose to manifest.
Furthermore, Christians need to live with a certain detachment to this earthly life. Jesus tells us not to be afraid of losing earth because heaven will be our gain. “What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9) Despite the mystery, we can trust Christ that it is going to be great. Put earthly anxieties aside (the ones that make you want to gossip and complain in private), be bold in faith, live with virtue and intentionality, and fear eternal destruction. What is the remedy? Trust in God. Seek heaven above all. The choice is yours.
Ponder:
How can you choose heaven or hell with your actions today? What weaknesses do you demonstrate behind closed doors that you could prayerfully prune?
Pray:
Jesus, help heal me of my sinful behaviors. Jesus, teach me to speak with love even in my private, more hidden moments.
Pray Together:
Encourage your family to speak words of kindness, especially to others they easily criticize.
