Today's Gospel: Luke 13:10-17

Throughout my time in education, whether as a leader or as a parent, I’ve noticed how heavy school backpacks have become. Some days, when my kids drop them at the door, the sound makes me wince. It’s like they’re carrying bricks. I’ll sometimes pick one up myself and wonder how they’ve managed to walk home under all that weight. It’s no wonder they’re hunched over, exhausted before homework even begins. When I offer to carry it, I see the relief in their faces.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus sees a woman who has been bent over for eighteen years. Others may have walked past her without noticing, but Jesus stops, calls her forward, and heals her. While some criticize Him for doing this on the Sabbath, Jesus is more concerned with her dignity and freedom than with rules or appearances.

As parents, we know what it feels like to watch our children carry burdens that are too heavy for them. Sometimes those burdens are physical, like backpacks or chores. More often, they’re the invisible kind: anxiety about school, the pressure to fit in, or the fear of disappointing us. These weights may not be obvious, but they bend our children down just the same. And if we’re honest, we also carry our own invisible loads: guilt for not doing enough, fears about the future, or the nagging feeling that we’re falling short.

The good news is that Jesus notices what weighs us down. He sees beyond the surface, and He calls us to step closer so He can lift what we can’t carry alone. When we let Him do this, we stand taller, and our children witness what true freedom in Christ looks like—lived out, not just spoken.

Ponder:

What burden am I carrying that I need to let Jesus lift from my shoulders?

Pray:

Jesus, help me to stand tall in Your love and show my children that You see and care for them, too.

Pray Together:

Make a list of things that feel heavy or stressful right now. Pray together, asking Jesus to take each one into His hands.
