Explore how Jesus challenges our understanding of rules in daily life, emphasizing compassion over rigidity, and guiding us toward a deeper connection with God.
Today's Gospel: Luke 14:1-6
I find it interesting that the day I am writing this reflection is the day at work I felt undermined by trying to follow the rules. Rules I even made myself. Another person called the rules “not fair” even though she was not affected by them. Now I am in a moral conundrum about whether to enforce my rules even though they are not hurting anyone.
I feel that Jesus is pointing out the opposite. When someone is hurting, we do what is in our power to help them. Jesus healed a man who was suffering, when working on the Sabbath is against the rules. He then pointed out to those who wanted to accuse Him that if their son or ox was in distress on the Sabbath, they would want to help them.
Why are there rules in the first place? Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary describes a rule as “a prescribed guide for conduct or action.” I would like to think that a rule is for guiding others along a path that will benefit them, as well as those around them. Some may not think the rules are fair. Also, the rules may need to be thought about and considered in each circumstance. But a rule is there to guide and help others find their way and keep harm from befalling anyone around them.
So what is Jesus trying to tell me in my situation? I wonder if the rules I made are for others' benefit or mine. I wonder whether I am trying to be right or right with God. Ultimately, Jesus is the only one who will grade me on the “rules,” so He is the best guide I have.
Ponder:
Are the rules we make being used to guide or control?
Pray:
Jesus, You guide our hearts to the rules of God. Keep us clear on what that means in every situation.
Pray Together:
As a family, discuss with each other why there are rules, what your family’s rules are, and how they bring you closer to God.
