Today's Gospel: John 6:37-40
Following the miracles of the multiplication of the loaves and Jesus walking on water, John’s focus here is less on these as spectacular acts of power and more on the close relationship of the work of Jesus, the Bread of Life, to the salvation of humanity. First, Jesus underscores that He seeks the will of the Father and that will is not to lose anything given to Him. Earlier, Jesus commanded the disciples to “gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted.” (John 6:12) Much like the fragments of the loaves that fed the multitude, all is valued and should be saved. While some might argue that a piece is too small or one’s gifts too insignificant to matter, that clearly is not indicated here.
It reminds us, too, of the importance of the one- the One seeking and the one pursued. All that God has created is loved, valued, and has a divine purpose. Regardless of our choices in the past, God desires to redeem, renew, and recreate us anew. Though we might feel lost, at times, in our journey of life, we are not lost to God so that in every moment Christ seeks to draw us closer to the Father and His will for us.
Our identity, therefore, cannot be defined solely by what we have done or failed to do but on who we are because of who He is. And this is indeed Good News! For as Christians, the waters of baptism are a reminder of the life we have been called to, to live in His love. Likewise, this passage, often chosen for funerals, is an indication of the love that remains for each of us to be with Him on the last day.
Ponder:
How do I feel about God desiring to grant eternal life with Him to everyone? Do I see myself as one in need of a savior?
Pray:
Jesus, Your words are life-giving in a world that seeks to define us by our choices and circumstances. Help me, today, to hear Your voice, to desire to follow the Father’s will for my life, and reach out to those who feel lost along the way.
