Explore today's Gospel reflection on discipleship, prioritizing Jesus in daily life, and embracing faith in ordinary moments.
Today's Gospel: Luke 14:25-33
I am a both/and kind of person. I like to think of things creatively and look for abundance. This approach comes at least in part from faith in our God as an abundant God, the source of creativity and life. Practically, this approach to life serves me well and allows me to pivot and remain positive.
When I encounter someone who is more of an either/or person, I can get a little frustrated or perturbed. "Why so rigid?" I think. Or, "Isn’t that a little negative?"
Jesus, Word made flesh, truth incarnate, lover of our souls, knows we sometimes need to be encouraged in both/and but sometimes need the directness of either/or. Today’s Gospel reading is an example of the latter.
Either you are My disciple or you are not. Either you put Me first or you do not.
We make many choices throughout each day—what to eat, what to wear, where to go, what to say in conversations or texts, how much time to spend on technology, when we pray, etc.
How does Jesus fit into these decisions? How can we put Him first in all things?
Being Jesus’s disciple happens in all of the little moments of our lives. He is not far away, but very near and desires that we seek and practice loving Him where He has placed us and with whom He has given to us.
Today, let’s put Jesus first, and let’s choose “disciple” as our primary name.
Ponder:
How do you put Jesus first in your life, even in the most ordinary of moments?
Pray:
Jesus, I love You. Thank You for this day. How can I serve You?
Pray Together:
Examine rhythms of your family life. What needs to be simplified in order to keep Jesus as your foundation and vision?
