Today's Gospel: John 2:13-22

Growing up in a multi-sibling home, I often heard the words, “Get out and stay out!” It was a way to let our parents know that we were at our limit and that perhaps they may want to intervene. This is along the lines of what Jesus was doing that day in the sacred space of the temple. He scared them and got their attention.

Yes, Jesus was trying to get the attention of people who thought the money they made and the things they did were more important than the temple, His Father’s house. He fashioned a whip from cords and flipped tables. Jesus was warning them all of what was coming. He was exclaiming to the moneychangers that they were placing a higher value on money than they were in seeking to praise God. However, he was also speaking to all in attendance, as they were guilty of allowing the disrespectful behaviors.

In today’s Church, it can feel like money is the focus, and it concerns me. Presents and parties galore for sacraments. Raising money for a building fund. Yet, we are at Mass to focus on God, not on the desires of men.

When children are small, we pray that Jesus has their attention. We are called to guide them and help them refocus on Him – however many times it takes. When I am in Church, I seek the Word of God, a priestly lesson (the homily) and the Eucharist.

Our beautiful churches are houses of worship. They belong to God, and we seek Him there. Let us not forget that.

Ponder:

If Jesus walked into my parish today, would He flip tables or say, "Well done, good and faithful servants?" What if He walked into my domestic church?

Pray:

Lord, keep me focused on reverence for You as I enter the sacred space of the sanctuary. May I always be in awe of You and treat Your house as a holy and reverent space.
