Today's Gospel: Luke 17:20-25
In the Our Father, we pray for God’s kingdom to come. However, in today’s Gospel, Jesus tells the Pharisees,
“The coming of the Kingdom of God cannot be observed, and no one will announce, ‘Look, here it is,’ or, ‘There it is.’ For behold, the Kingdom of God is among you."
If Jesus is saying that the kingdom of God is already among us, why do we pray “Thy kingdom come” during the Lord’s Prayer?
On the one hand, Jesus was saying that God’s kingdom was already among them because He was working signs, preaching, and healing. However, there is more to this story. God’s kingdom is among us whenever we act like Jesus. When we develop that childlike wonder that causes us to look outside of ourselves in curiosity at the world and to strive to help others, we are making God’s kingdom present here on Earth.
A great example of this kind of childlike wonder and sense of service is today’s patron saint, Frances Xavier Cabrini. As a young girl, she wanted nothing more than to be like her hero, the great Jesuit missionary St. Francis Xavier. She wanted to travel to foreign lands and help children in need. Although she never traveled to China as she had hoped, she did travel throughout North America, South America, and Europe serving the poor, especially immigrants. She did this by being the face of Christ to them. She established schools, hospitals, and orphanages that took care of people’s physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. Throughout her travels, she turned to the Sacred Heart of Jesus for strength and guidance.
Ponder:
How can I help to make God’s kingdom present on earth today?
Pray:
Sacred Heart of Jesus, just as You strengthened St. Frances Xavier Cabrini to make God’s kingdom present to those in need, help me to be the face of Christ to my family and all I meet today.
