Today's Gospel: Luke 19:45-48

Today's Gospel can be unsettling to our image of the meek and gentle Jesus that warms our hearts. When listening to this Gospel, I sometimes wonder how I would have reacted if I’d been there to see this scene in real life. I’m sure surprise and disbelief would have been among my emotions. I’d like to think “wise Sheri” would have dropped to her knees and thought, Lord, what are You trying to teach me because this is a bit out of character for You, and You’ve got my attention. I love “wise Sheri,” but she doesn’t hit the scene often enough!

This Gospel isn’t just an account of a happening in the life of Jesus; it has relevance today when we think about it through the eyes of our Creator. As you pray with this reading today, ask Jesus to charge right into your life and dramatically tip over some tables. The tables that Jesus flipped were those that represented “thieves” in His Father’s house. Truth be told, I’ve got plenty of tables full of things that distract me from the place of peace and prayer my heart and my life were created to be. There are thieves lurking in our life just waiting to separate us from the Prince of Peace.  Things like expectations, comparison, and pride are at the top of my list. I hate to admit it, but sometimes those things are on a full table display for others to see, and I need Jesus to flip them over and help me sweep those useless wares out of my life. It’s more than just recognizing the rotten tables and thieves; we need to give Jesus permission to flip them for good so we can draw closer to Him in prayer. But how? Lucky for us, today's Gospel contains the solution--the people were hanging on His words. I need to hang onto His words instead of my tables.

Ponder:

What are the things in your life that need to be “flipped over” so you can grow in holiness?

Pray:

Lord Jesus, I beg You today to shine a light on the thieves that divert my attention and sap my joy. I bring those things to Your feet so You can restore the prayerful peace I was created to dwell in.
