Today's Gospel: Luke 20:27-40
Have you ever had your children start to ask you a question, and you immediately knew it was a trap? Whether they were pitting mom against dad, wanting you to choose their side of an argument over a sibling, or trying to get you to say yes without all of the information, children have a way of framing the interrogation in a way that sways the answer in their favor.
The Sadducees approach Jesus in this way. Despite their detailed story of the husbands and this wife, Jesus sees right through their plan. It is immediately obvious to Jesus that the primary concern of the Sadducees is not who is “Mr. Right” in heaven, but whether the concept of resurrection even makes sense. Jesus, using language they would understand, cites Moses in saying that “he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”
Once again, Jesus gently shows the Sadducees that they are asking the wrong question.
How often do we tend to ask the wrong question and focus on the wrong details? When we have doubts or setbacks in our faith, it is important to take our questions to Jesus, who can listen for what we are asking, as well as the hidden, deeper Truth that we are seeking.
We must trust that Jesus will answer our questions until the day comes when we no longer have to ask Him anything but simply can walk in the light of the resurrection.
Ponder:
What faith questions do you need to lay at the feet of Jesus for clarity today?
Pray:
Good and gracious teacher, our human thoughts limit our ability to understand the vastness of your beauty and goodness. Teach us to seek You with honest questions and open hearts so that we may receive Your instruction and correction.
