Reflection by Colleen Rooney

Today's Gospel: Matthew 15:29-37

What were the great crowds that followed Jesus looking for? They saw a man who cared for them and cared for those they loved. The crowds were moved by the healing power of Jesus. They brought “the lame, the blind, the deformed, the mute, and many others,” and placed them at His feet, He healed them, and they were amazed. What kind of man goes out to great crowds and heals them?

What kind of man leaves personal ambitions aside for others? Jesus is God and man. He possesses the healing power only God has and the love of the Creator for His creatures.

We know from experience there are many today who suffer from the same diseases and illnesses as in Our Lord’s time. God sent His mother, Mary, to a young girl named Bernadette to establish a spring of healing waters. These waters in Lourdes, France, are visited by millions every year in the hopes of healing. There have been seventy verified healings and many more besides.

Jesus not only healed the disabled, He fed the crowd. His heart was moved by pity for they were hungry. Just as He had miraculously healed the deformed, He then miraculously fed the four thousand men and their families.

The actions of Jesus in the Gospels are stories that we can picture in our imagination and are meant to instruct and inspire. In these accounts, we see God’s great kindness and healing power.

We see His heart, a heart which repeatedly responds to us. Our Lord healed many. He gave us Lourdes where many experience miraculous healings. He fed the four thousand and their families.

Today He feeds us with His Body and Blood in the Eucharist.

Ponder:

Do you feel the love of Jesus for you and your family?

Pray:

Jesus, thank You for showing us Your immense love. Help our family to grow day by day in Your love and to share it with others.
