Today's Gospel: Matthew 9:35-10:1, 5a, 6-8
Jesus is going from town to town teaching and proclaiming the Gospel. He then sends out the apostles to tell people the good news. Jesus tells the apostles to proclaim “The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” It is amazing that through Jesus, the Kingdom of Heaven is still at hand.
Today also happens to be the feast day of St. Nicholas. He is a saint who truly heard Christ’s words and lived his life for Christ.
St. Nicholas is known by many legends, including saving three young women from having to live an unsavory life, saving a ship, and expelling demons. When St. Nicholas was told he would be a bishop, he humbly refused to become the bishop because he felt unworthy. I am sure through all of his work here on earth that St. Nicholas’s main goal was to live a life like Christ, preaching about our amazing Savior and telling the people that "the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!”
In the secular world, we have a skewed view of who St. Nicholas actually was and how he lived his life. Sometimes when I hear “St. Nicholas,” all I can think of is the big guy with a red-nosed reindeer named Rudolph. However, as Catholics, we need to see how St. Nicholas lived his life the same way Jesus called the apostles to live their lives. Saint Nicholas is more than just a man that we hear of at Christmastime. He is a great example of how a person can live their life for Christ.
Ponder:
How can I show others that "the Kingdom of God is at hand" today?
Pray:
Jesus, thank You for Your words today. Help me to live a life that directs others to You, just as St. Nicholas did many years ago. St. Nicholas, pray for us!
