Today's Gospel: Matthew 11:2-11

No matter how many parenting books you read, how much good advice you receive, or how many hours you spent babysitting, nothing can prepare you for the reality of becoming a mom. It’s simply one of those things you have to experience firsthand to truly know what it means.

Christianity is the same way. You can learn the historical truths about Jesus, hear compelling stories of conversion, and attend many Masses as an observer, but until you experience a personal encounter with Christ, you cannot truly understand what it means to be a Christian beloved by your Savior.

No one knew this better than St. John the Baptist, the cousin of Jesus and the final prophet preparing the Jewish people for His coming. Yet, when he was imprisoned, John the Baptist sent his disciples to question if Jesus was truly the one who was to come. According to St. Thomas Aquinas, this sending was not because of John’s doubt but rather so that his disciples could encounter Christ in that dramatic, personal way we’ve all experienced.

Jesus’ answer about His miracles may seem cryptic, but for devout Jews who knew the Scriptures well, they would hear that Jesus is fulfilling the prophecies from Isaiah (cf. Isaih 35; 61). To outsiders like Roman officials, Jesus isn’t claiming a position of authority or making a threat. To insiders like the disciples of John the Baptist and those of us who have encountered Christ, we hear His proclamation: Jesus is indeed the Christ, the One who is to come.

Ponder:

How have I experienced the transforming love of Christ in my life?

Pray:

Lord, lead me deeper in faith and understanding of You and Your ways so that I may become the disciple You want me to be.
