Today's Gospel: Matthew 21:23-27

If you’ve ever watched the movie A Few Good Men with Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson, you’ll remember the scene with the famous line “You can’t handle the truth,” where Nicholson's character is on the stand and is being questioned by Tom Cruise’s character. While Nicholson’s character is far from the role of Jesus, he recognizes that the truth is powerful.

Today’s Gospel talks about how the chief priests question Jesus’ authority. When they high priests ask who gives Jesus authority, He challenges them by asking who has given John the Baptist authority. The high priests know that if they reply that John the Baptist is a prophet and is called by the same authority, they will have to admit Jesus’ authority.

They can’t handle the truth. But the Gospel is not keeping the truth away from the chief priests.

Jesus sees they are blinded by their pride and recognizes that no matter what answer He gives, their hearts will not change. He does not respond to their answer.

How many times do we have a hard time handling the truth when our pride gets in the way? Jesus says He is the way, the truth, and the life. He will never force Himself on us, yet He calls us to seek His path.

Ponder:

How can you seek the truth and remove the veil of pride?

Pray:

Jesus, help me to humbly seek You. Help me to recognize You in all I do and surrender my pride to You.
