Today's Gospel: Luke 1:46-56
As a spiritual director, I can relate to this verse as if Elizabeth was Mary’s prayer companion. Mary is filled with joy over the “God moments” she has experienced. As Mary describes her emotions, she recognizes and praises God’s work in her daily life. Recognizing God’s movement in one's life is the nuts and bolts of a conversation between a spiritual director and a directee.
Engaging in a spiritual direction session, where I sit with a directee and listen intently, is a profoundly moving experience. I can envision the room being filled with the Holy Spirit as Mary, in her humble yet exultant state, rejoices in her role as a blessed servant of God. Praying with this Scripture and using it as a basis for spiritual direction is a simple yet effective way to blend imaginative prayer with scripture.
Mary’s Song, or Magnificat, is a prayer to our Savior filled with humility and pride. Have you ever considered writing your own Magnificat? Prayerfully consider the blessings in your life for which you want to praise God. All these things are a sacrament of God, and your joyful praise is a song to our Lord. Reach down into your heart, sing it out, write it out, or speak to your spiritual director. Allow the blessings to flow through you and outward to others.
Ponder:
Have I praised God for the blessings in my life with love, honor, humility, and pride with a heart as open as Mary’s?
Pray:
Loving God, thank You for all the ways You have blessed my life. I ask for the desire to sing Your song of praise for each and every blessing You bring my way.
