Today's Gospel: Matthew 10:17-22

Scripture often has a startling effect on me. I try to picture myself in the shoes of the apostles. How would I react to the words and deeds of Jesus?

In the previous passage, Jesus sends out the twelve apostles, charging them to go to the lost sheep of Israel, preaching that the kingdom of God is at hand. The mission is to heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, and cast out demons. Such a tall order!

Jesus’ Great Commission is fraught with danger. The apostles will be dragged before kings and governors, persecuted, hated, and flogged. Jesus does not say perhaps they will be attacked. Theywill be targeted. Imagine hearing this warning. I would tremble in my boots. It is not exactly a $1,000 sign-up bonus.

Jesus did not say take up your golf clubs and follow me. Take up your cross and follow me. Certainly, He does not preach a prosperity gospel. It is the rocky road of the cross. Today we honor St. Stephen, the first martyr. How amazing that his death by stoning comes the day after Christmas. Christianity is not a message filled with tinsel and fuzzy warm feelings.

All people, rich and poor alike, have crosses to bear. Troubles come in all shapes and sizes. We cling to the cross of Jesus for our strength.

Ponder:

Do you face the trials of life with faith or fear?

Pray:

Dear Jesus, some days my mind is filled with worry. Help me to cast away fear and trust in You.
