Today's Gospel: John 1:1-18
Darkness fills the room on this cold winter morning. A quiet stillness accompanies i, as the rest of my family remains asleep on this seventh day of Christmas.
I turn on the lights of the Christmas tree. Their glow spreads warmth into the room, and they remind me of “the true light” that came into the world so many years ago. His “light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
Moments later, my coffee is done brewing, and I settle into some quiet time with the Lord. As I invite Him to meet me in this time of prayer, I instantly imagine Him as a tiny baby in the manger. He is comfortable and cozy in the swaddling clothes His mother sewed for Him. Saint Joseph watches over Him and Mary. And while their surroundings are not ideal, they know they are safe within the providence of God.
The past year has been filled with challenging circumstances, and I admit to God that I did not always trust Him. But pondering the Holy Family in their own uncertainty, the Lord reminds me that He came into this world to dwell among us, to dwell with me. In every moment, through every circumstance, Jesus is with me. He never forgets about me or ignores my circumstances. He is always present, because everything that happens, happens through Him (cf. John 1:3).
He is the author of life, the author of all. And when we believe in Him and trust in Him, He gives us “power to become children of God.”
As I renew my trust in God’s providence in my own life, I think of that tiny babe in the manger, Who was born for me. He is the greatest gift, a gift worth savoring in the soft glow of Christmas light.
Ponder:
How are you savoring the gift of Jesus’ birth this Christmas?
Pray:
Sweet Jesus, thank You for loving me so much that You came into this world to dwell with me. Thank You for always being by my side, especially when life is difficult.
