Catholic Book Spotlight: Unlikely Spiritual Heroesby Brennan R. Hill

I very much enjoyed this book.  When I looked at the names of the eight heroes Hill profiled in the book, I recognized most of them, but didn’t really know much about any of them.  I found myself going to the computer to look up some question that I "needed" to know as a result of the brief profiles.  The book is a "quick and easy" read - something to take along for waiting rooms you may be sitting in.

Only one of the eight is still alive.  I have been a fan of Helen Prejean for years, ever since I read Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account Of The Death Penalty In The United States.  It was good to learn more about her early life and background.  I was recently able to hear her speak and I became renewed in my enthusiasm for her fight to abolish the Death Penalty.

Another hero that had a personal link for me is Cardinal Joseph Bernardin.  One of my daughters lives in Chicago, and was able to attend the "Theology on Tap"  lecture series that included a picnic on his lawn.

Of course Pope John Paul II is one the most known heroes, but I learned much of his early life and again went to the computer to look up information that the profile brought up.

I am certain that more that one of the heroes will some day be canonized.  I think almost everyone will find something in the book that will speak directly to them.  Maybe this book will help them to renew a special mission they might have lost enthusiasm for, or spark a new one.
