The introduction of Jared Zimmerer's book The Ten Commandments of Lifting Weights explains his intent for men.  But after reviewing it as a wife and mom, I found quite a bit that applies to those of us that don't lift weights but are drawn to the need for exercise.  I must make it clear that I feel drawn to the need for exercise, not drawn to exercise itself. In other words, it's a constant battle to get myself up and moving in some form of formal physical activity.  What really intrigues me about this book is that it meshes the growth of body and soul.  It explains the importance of staying fit, recognizing  that the body is the instrument given to us to do the work of God.  If we don't stay healthy we aren't as able to work in the vineyard.  But, this book goes to the other end of the spectrum as well.  Jared really highlights the need for modesty and humility even with a chiseled physique.  Each and every commandment leads the reader back to God, helping him grow in relationship with the ultimate Heavy Weight Champion, even as it guides him to a healthier practice of weight lifting, itself.  It is the focus on why we practice a routine of physical activity that I found personally beneficial.  Most women aren't going to be required to be excessively physically strong; only strong enough to carry a two year old, a couple of bags of groceries, a diaper bag and a purse all at the same time.  Most of us, God-willing, won't have to fight off any villains, except the neighborhood bullies.  Regardless, we still have to come to the realization that we can't be the super-heroine that we might be called to be if we aren't taking care of ourselves.

Jared uses scripture, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the writings of the Doctors of the Church and Catholic authors, quotes from fitness and weight lifting authors, works of the saints, popes, philosophers and current Church leaders.  He backs up each and every argument of the fitness world with the balance of body and soul as taught for centuries in the Church.

Jared is the founder of Strength for the Kingdom, a men's ministry dedicated to promoting men's growth in virtue, knowledge of the Catholic faith, and the understanding of authentic masculinity through physical endeavors including weight lifting, martial arts and survival skills.  More of his information regarding his speaking, training and events can be found at balancedfamiliesministries.com.
