Trying--and Loving--Skitch

Hello again! It's your Evernote Evangelist here, and today I'm going to be talking about a nifty app that integrates with Evernote.

Skitch is available for the iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets, and as a desktop application for the Mac. It will eventually be available on the latest version of Windows, but for now, I'm going to focus on some simple tasks it does very well on your smartphone.

Entertain preschoolers! 

Oh, sure, I could focus on the many other cool tricks that Skitch can do, but Occupying Toddler Street is way up there on my list.

Skitch offers some simple drawing capabilities that can keep a small child occupied for a few minutes as he draws tornadoes, pasta, and other modern art. Observe:

"LOOK. I'm drawing on your phone!" says the four-year-old.

Give Grandma directions!

With the map tool, you can enter a location, "pin" nearby locations on the map, and annotate the map by tracing a route with your finger, adding an arrow and/or text to highlight the relevant places on the map. You can plan an entire afternoon for Grandma and the kids by showing her how to get to the library and Chick Fil-A.

Tricked-out images!

Speaking of grandmothers, look at these darling Cookie Monster cakes my mother-in-law made for my son's birthday!

If she had a blog, she'd definitely need to make this image "pinnable," wouldn't you agree? Skitch is a very fast way to add basic text to an image to make it more "Pinterest-friendly" if you are on the go and don't have access to photo editing software for fancy watermarks, etc.

You can also use this little app to share images with actual humans (versus Pinterest, I mean). Observe how elegantly I have captioned my wall of pictures so that I'll remember to get some cute candids for my empty frame:

There are some great things you can do with Skitch if you have the desktop application or are using it on a tablet, but I happen to think it's a terrific app for the smartphone as well. Best of all, of course, is that you can save any of your creations directly to Evernote from right within Skitch.
