Publisher: Magnificat Books; Cost: $.99; Platform: Kindle

After I reviewed the Magnificat Advent Companion for iOS devices, my mother wanted to see if there was a version of the Advent Companion for Kindle.

Happily there was and so we decided to download it and check it out.  (Mom was thrilled to find out that the Magnificat Companion for the Year of Faith was also available on Kindle.)

Included in the Kindle version of the Advent Companion are:

  • daily Advent reflections and devotional prayers
  • an essay on the history of Christmas in England
  • an Advent penance service, and
  • Advent Stations: Office of the Ancestors of Christ (a meditation of the genealogy of Jesus).

All of these pieces are beautifully written and easy to add to your daily prayers.  They also make a great set of reflections around the Advent wreath for families with older kids.  If you have used the Advent Companion in print form, the format will be familiar, but the content is unique each year.

The download was quick (much quicker than when I loaded the app), but I soon figured out why.  Instead of the rich full-featured Magnificat I got in my iOS app for the same price, I got only the Advent Meditations and Advent Devotions.  Missing from this version are the Morning, Evening and Night Prayers and the Mass Readings.  I have to admit; I was disappointed.

It’s still a nice collection of prayers and reflections, but, if you have an iOS device and a Kindle, I would pick the iOS app over the Kindle edition.  That being said, if you have a Kindle (or are using Kindle for PC), this is a great value and a great resource for Advent prayer and meditation.
