Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord. In pondering Mary's "yes" we are reminded of the words of today's Gospel and most especially those words from Mary's heart:
Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
May it be done to me according to your word.”
Today is a special day to share in our homes, since the heart of the Annunciation created the Holy Family. Here are a few special tools for you to bring this holy feast to life in your home:
- Relive the moment: Read the Gospel for today together as a family and discuss ways in which you are each being called to answer "yes" to God's will for your life
- Get artsy: Enjoy an Annunciation Coloring Page or -- better yet -- create your own family work of art. For some motivation, check out the many artistic depictions of this holy moment created by artists throughout the centuries.
- Start a new prayer tradition: Our friend and contributor Jared Dees of TheReligionTeacher.com proposes a renewed devotion to family prayer of the Angelus (or the Regina Coeli). Dinnertime is the perfect moment to pray this together. Another great option is to pray a family Rosary tonight together.
- Create a feast fit for angels: CatholicCulture.org has some terrific recipe recommendations for today, including the perfect desert - angel food cake!
If your family has a special way of celebrating today's Solemnity of the Annunciation, please share your traditions in the comments below.
