A New Perspective on the Sacrament: 7 Secrets of Confession

When I found out that I was going to review Vinny Flynn’s new book, 7 Secrets of Confession, I couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into it for several reasons:

Reconciliation is hard and I need all the help I can get.
I figured that “7 Secrets” would be less intimidating than a treatise on the history and theology behind the Sacrament. And,
I met Vinny (briefly) in 2012 at the Catholic Marketing Network Trade Show and was impressed by his warmth, humor, and with the time he took to speak with me even though I wasn’t a bookstore owner, publisher, or other big wig.

After reading 7 Secrets of Confession, I found that I had good reason for my eagerness. Vinny’s writing style is casual and accessible without being overly simplistic or shallow. He doesn’t shy from tackling difficult topics such as the timelessness of God (my mind is still blown from his explanation) but he does so in a way that allows the average reader to digest it easily.

Did I learn anything new about the Sacrament? Yes! More than I expected to, in fact. But the most significant thing I came away with after reading it was a new perspective; a new perspective on the sacrament as well as on sin.

I encourage you to read 7 Secrets of Confession. Soon. Really soon. I think it will give you a deeper understanding and appreciation of the role that the Sacrament of Reconciliation has in our relationship with God. Don’t be surprised if you feel the urge to go to Reconciliation while you read this book. I certainly did. In fact, I’d better wrap it up. Reconciliation is starting soon!
