Book Talk, Light the Night Edition

This weekend, I joined my family and walked to support Lymphoma and Leukemia research in the Light the Night Walk. My husband and kids walked too, and I was really struck by (a) the number of people and (b) how choked up I got as I walked.

A number of you supported me in this walk: thank you for that!

I have nothing to report, and I'm embarrassed to admit that the reason is that...cough...I can't seem to find my Kindle! Ahem. St. Anthony and I are in negotiations, I may or may not be checking out attachment devices and/or beeping thingies, and I am DYING TO FINISH SIMCHA'S BOOK (in case you had any doubt).

The Sinner's Guide to Natural Family Planning, by Simcha Fisher (Amazon Digital Services, 2013)

Yes, it IS just as good as I thought it would be. The last time I had my Kindle, in fact, I remember nodding off trying to finish just one more chapter (the couch, however, denies any evidence of said Kindle)... Even as she makes me roll on the floor laughing, nearly to the point of tears, Fisher forces me to think more deeply. It's a tricky way she has of writing. (Yeah, I'm a fan.)

True or False Possession? How to Distinguish the Demonic from the Demented, by Jean Lhermitte (Sophia Institute Press, 2013)

This just isn't light reading. It is, however, fascinating. That doesn't make it quick to read, either. I have to be completely awake when I'm reading this, and even then there's a chance that I'll walk away wondering why I'm trying.

How and When to Tell Your Kids about Sex: A Lifelong Approach to Shaping Your Child's Sexual Character (God's Design for Sex), by Brenna and Stan Jones (NavPress, 2007)

I'm realizing why I don't read this sort of book (parenting, self-help, sex...you pick). It's not a bad book, mind you. It's very well done. It's just...not really my cup of tea. But it's necessary, and I will finish it. Just not quickly.

Real Men Pray the Rosary: A Practical Guide to a Powerful Prayer, by David N. Calvillo (Ave Maria Press, 2013)

I finally picked this one up when I determined that my Kindle would not just magically appear on the counter where I last remember placing it. I've only gotten as far as the introductory stuff, but I am really looking forward to diving in.

Acts of the Apostles: Good News for All Peoples (Liguori Catholic Bible Study), by Fr. William Anderson (Liguori, 2013)

I have to hand it to the folks at Liguori: this is goooood. Our pastor's doing it as part of his weekly Bible study, and though I can't attend his study, I'm doing it from home. It's designed to be a group study, but I'm doing just fine on my own. I've never had much success with lectio divina, and this study takes a little bit of a different approach: and somehow, I'm finding it helpful. That, and the way things are divided and then written is working well for me.
