What do you and a guard from the undefeated Wichita State Shockers men’s basketball team have in common?

You will both reap the benefits—good or bad— of choosing between what is “good” and what is “better”.

Here in Wichita, Kansas it’s snowing black and gold. Our undefeated Wichita State Shockers broke the record for most collegiate regular season wins with their 34-0 record. With their victory in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament the Shockers power into March Madness with the momentum of beating opponents handily by 20-30 points a game.

In local grocery stores WSU fans and proud Wichitans walk into displays of the five starters on the cover of the latest Sports Illustrated magazine.

One of those starters, the only blond, the only Kansan—Ron Baker—almost didn’t go to Wichita State. In fact, WSU didn’t recruit him.

Only two colleges offered Ron scholarships—University of Arkansas and South Dakota State University. But the 7- to 8-hour distance deterred him from accepting them. Ron did not want to be so far from family.

Baker turned down those scholarships to walk on to the Wichita State basketball team.

Ron Baker had the confidence to do what many mom business owners won’t.

He listened to his internal compass to align his decisions with his values and to follow his dream.

Ron Baker took a risk despite what might be the safer bet.

He chose what was “better” over what was “good”.

And look what God’s idea of “better” has turned out to be for Ron Baker and the Wichita State Shockers.

The fruit of Ron Baker’s courage and confidence to go for what was and is “better” landed him the role of a key player and leader on an unselfish team that 1) won the NIT tournament in 2011; 2) was in the Final Four in 2013 and now has a perfect record; 3) is number two in the country and will likely be a number one seed in the NCAA tournament.

Ron Baker and the Wichita State Shockers are about to make history.

So what would your mom biz and family and personal life be like should you take those risks that lead to the “better” choices instead of just the “good” ones?

If you want to manifest your dreams, it’s time to become a “Baker”.

Catholic Mompreneur’s Guide to Biz and Life Tip: Write down three ways you are settling for less and take steps to listen to God’s will and make the “better” choices.
