The beautiful mess of parenting is portrayed so wonderfully in Moms' Night Out (released in theaters on May 9, 2014). The film stars Sarah Drew as Allyson, who is a stressed-out mom in need of a night alone with friends (without the kids). They leave the children in the care of their husbands for a few hours only to have a crazy string of events take place with God at the heart of the message. Children are His gifts to us, and sometimes we need to slow down to appreciate His gifts. We get caught up in the drama of the everyday mishaps, instead of just loving our children as they are.
The story has a bunch of laughs and pokes fun at the amount of stress in one day as a mom. I see myself in the times she freaks out and how she just needs a break from the “Mom” title. As a mom, it can be hard to let other people help out and let go of some of the control. It may be easier to do everything on your own and push yourself to be some ideal that you can never be. God meets us where we are, and He doesn't expect us to be someone we weren't made to be. There is a peace that comes with being as God made us.
Faith is intertwined softly into the movie without hitting the audience over the head. These are Christian moms just going out for a night and leaving the “Mom” card at home. The truth in the movie is heartwarming. I really enjoyed the movie, as did my husband. He didn't think it would be something a “Dad” could enjoy, but the laughs kept him sitting in his seat. The movie is great for a family night or even wonderful as a date night for parents. It will help you to laugh at yourself through familiar moments on the screen and remind you of the blessings already in the home: your children.
Sometimes as parents we take things too seriously, but at the end of the day, we love our children and they love us too. You will cry, laugh, and relate with the characters in Moms' Night Out. Treat yourself to your own “Moms' Night” and go see this movie. You will be glad that you did!
