Daily Gospel Reflection for June 22, 2014

Today's Gospel: John 6:51-58

A few years ago, I was attending mass at my father-in-law’s parish in upstate New York.  When it came time for communion the line formed and a young boy of about 8 or 9 in a navy blue suit, all dressed up for the occasion, ran to the line. He hopped from one open laced hiking booted foot to the other in anticipation of what he was to receive.  Moving as quickly as he could, he fairly pushed the woman in front to get to the priest, just as he reached out his hand to receive, like a silent ninja, his mom swooped in and dragged him away, explaining that he had not made his Holy Communion yet and could not take the Eucharist.

His crestfallen expression betrayed his heartbreak.  As he was pulled away, almost in tears he looked back longingly at the host he had come so close to attaining.

It was a great moment and I laughed at his audacity, but at the same time I thought, that should be me. As a Catholic, I believe in the true presence of the body and blood of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, I too should be running to communion; excited and awed by the gift of receiving this holiest of sacraments.

Ponder:

Are we sometimes blinded to the extraordinary gift of Jesus in the Eucharist?  Can we take a moment to focus on the miracle before us the next time we receive?

Pray:

Jesus, help me to focus on the miracle of your body and blood in the Eucharist.  As I receive you, come into my heart oh Lord, so that I may be more like you day by day.
