Today's Gospel: Luke 20:27-40

The Sadducees are questioning Jesus again, trying to trip him up. They question him about the law regarding a brother marrying his brother’s widow. The Sadducees are looking to the letter of the law. As Christians, we often do that too. We get so interested in the details of being Christian that we stop actually being the Christians we are commanded to be.

It reminds me of the old joke about being in church and listening to a beautiful homily and then everyone fighting to get out of the parking lot. It is important to follow Church teaching, but it is equally important to be a people of God. As the old song says, “they will know we are Christian by our love.” Let’s not lose sight of the forest for the trees. Let's do as Jesus did and follow His ways.

Ponder:

Do I sometimes get caught up in judging others instead of loving them in spite of their flaws or differences?

Pray:

Father, I trust in your love. I believe that you are the God of the living, help me to be a better Christian and to love you more and more each day.
