Today's Gospel: Mark 1:21-28
In this scripture passage from Mark, we see the beginnings of Jesus’ teaching ministry, and all who heard him were astonished. Why? Jesus drew his wisdom and authority not from the texts of the sacred scrolls, but from his loving relationship with the Father. Jesus and the Father are one, and the teaching authority that arose from this divine union was something the Israelites had never encountered, nor did they comprehend. Mark tells us that Jesus even had the power to rebuke the evil and unclean spirits from a man in the synagogue.
How often do we teach with the power of God? How often do we counteract evil with prayer? Each day of our lives we have the opportunity to minister to our family, our friends, and our neighbors with the authority of God because we are faithful followers of his son, Jesus Christ. Our heart and mind should be one with the Lord, and this loving relationship offers us the opportunity to bring the loving and compassionate power and teachings of Jesus wherever we go.
Ponder:
Reflect on a time when you felt the power of God working in and through you. What did you experience, and what were the results of this encounter?
Pray:
Lord God,
My heart seeks to be one with You.
Fill me with your divine presence
that I may lovingly help my family and friends
come to know and love you all the days of their life.
In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
