Daily Gospel Reflection for June 18, 2016

Today's Gospel: Matthew 6, 24-34

“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other”, thus opens today’s Gospel reading. What follows is an admonition to not fear or worry about the things of this world, because we are the beloved children of the Most High God. It is a message that we sorely need to hear in a world which seems to have gone suddenly mad, in a world which often seems to be gripped by a paralyzing fear of what may be. Who will care for these people? Where will we house them? Where will the resources necessary for such an undertaking be found?

As we worry and fret over the stretching of material resources and ask like those in the Gospel `What shall we eat?' or `What shall we drink?' or `What shall we wear?', we would do well to remember that our Heavenly Father sees all of these things and knows that we need them, and yet the Gospel admonishes us not to think on them. We are to seek His kingdom and righteousness, and let Him be in charge of the rest.
Are those who love Him to be less than the lilies of the field or the birds of the sky? Of course not.
Let us, then, not be anxious about what will come tomorrow, but do the work which He has placed before us today. Let us find peace in His great constancy and cast our cares upon Him who is ever-faithful to those who call upon Him.

We need to ask, not for material comfort and surety, but to be the physical manifestation of the mercy and love of our Almighty God in this troubled world.

When your world seems to be spinning out of control, where do you find peace?

Pray:

Dear Jesus, many times the cares and wants of this world become so loud that they drown out the sound of your voice. Please help us to hear your words of comfort in these trying times and to place our trust in your capable hands. Amen
