The five senses are five gifts to us, allowing us to engage fully in the world around us. They offer a great framework for prayer, too. No matter how busy we are, there is a lot that can be gained by taking a few brief moments to review the sights, sounds, smells, feelings, and tastes we enjoyed over the course of a day.
It’s rewarding to do this exercise not just with a certain day, but with an entire season. As the days grow colder and the leaves grow redder, here are some of the sensory treats of the fall. What would you add to the list?

*Leaves in varying shades of red, orange, yellow, brown, and leftover green
*Fat orange pumpkins tumbling out of supermarket bins
*The rich, mellow sunlight of an autumn afternoon
*The satisfying papery crunch of leaves underfoot
*The sound of geese overhead, flying away to warmer places
*Kids’ voices calling “Trick or treat!” from behind their masks
*The cool, fresh air that comes after the first rain of the season
*The distinctive smell of the inside of a pumpkin, on its way to becoming a jack-o-lantern
*Flannel pajamas, making their first re-appearance after being tucked away for months
*A duvet on a cool night
*The feel of a warm mug of coffee, cider, or tea between our hands
*Pumpkin spice, in all its various manifestations: coffee, pie, bread, pancakes
*Cranberry sauce, sweet and tart all at once
Take a few moments to think about your own favorite senses of the season. Thank God for his goodness.
