Book Review: All In, by Pat Gohn

Pat Gohn's book, All In, Why Belonging to the Catholic Church Matters, is a wonderful blend of conversation, consolation, conversion and catechism! The author artfully walks the reader through a journey of her own discoveries about faith, in the midst of serious challenges surrounding the Church. She delicately discusses the failings of some in the Church, while reminding the reader that the Bride of Christ (the Catholic Church) is both human and divine.

As an RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Coordinator/Catechist, I was drawn to the way Pat wove the teachings of the Church into her discussion. Exploring God's role as Our Father, Mary as Our Blessed Mother and the Mystical Body of Christ, she uses papal quotes, the Catechism of the Catholic Church and her own experience to lead the reader into a deeper understanding of the Catholic Faith and why we too should be All In.

The chapter (8) on Love of Neighbor, was probably one of my favorites. The challenge to love as God loves and the realization that "Our persecutors on earth may be, one day, our companions in heaven" was a wake-up call!

All In answers many of the questions, concerns and even criticisms of the Catholic Church with clarity and love. I would especially recommend this book to anyone wanting to better understand the Church or someone struggling with the shortcomings (sins) of some of its members.
