Daily Gospel Reflection for May 2, 2017

Today's Gospel: John 6:30-35 - St. Athanasius

As I reflect on today’s Gospel passage, these lines are really speaking to me:

The crowd said to Jesus:
"What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you?
What can you do?
Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written:
'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'"

What can you do? What will you give us in order for us to believe in you? The people in this Gospel passage wanted Jesus to DO something. Something they could see and be amazed by. They put conditions on their belief, asking Him to prove Himself first.

We humans haven’t changed all that much in the last couple thousand years, huh?

What if the miracle isn’t about the “doing,” but about the “being?”

What if the miracle happens when we strip away worldly thinking that values the doing? When we give ourselves the gift of simply being with Jesus? Quieting our minds and sitting still at His feet. Feeling the power of His incredible presence. Receiving His perfect love..."Whoever comes to me will never hunger."

A vulnerable stance for us humans to take. Which, I imagine, is what has us keep the focus on Him and what He might do, rather than on me and who I might become.

Ponder:

What would it be like for you to - fully and unreservedly – go to Jesus and open yourself to the “life-giving bread” He has for you?

Pray:

Lord, help me to be still in Your Presence. Grant that I may come with an open heart and be filled with the love You wish to give me today.
