Today's Gospel: Matthew 9:9-13

The call of Matthew in today's Gospel shows us just how surprising God can be. Here is a man, sitting in place of the ruling government, collecting taxes against the people of God. And Jesus comes along and invites him to follow on the journey.

Might I be missing a call to join in on the journey? Where could God possibly be sending me?

During the Year of Mercy just passed, Pope Francis advocated that care of creation be considered a Corporal Work of Mercy. An awareness of how all God created is linked may allow us to more easily see the hand of God in those around us. Giving food to the hungry or drink to the thirsty becomes a matter of sharing our God given resources with other children of God, who we freely visit when sick or imprisoned, who we clothe and educate and finally lay to rest.

It is mercy, not just sacrifice, that God desires. Freely giving of ourselves and our resources should be freely done, on our journey that God has called us on in a unique way.

Ponder:

When has the call of God most surprised you?

Pray:

Grant me the confidence to rise up and follow You, Lord, on those days when I feel least worthy.
