I’ve been a freelance editor since shortly after my first son was born, which is coming up on eight years. I’ve had the pleasure of working with a variety of writers on a range of projects, for adults and children, fiction and nonfiction. Some projects have been published; others haven’t. But I’ve learned something new on every one, and I’m grateful for that. With the grace of God and the support of my family, I’ve been able to pursue work that I love on my own timeline.
A year and a half ago, I launched into a new project that brings me such joy I want to share about it here. Little Lamb Books is a relatively new publisher of Christian books for children. They do picture books, chapter books, and young adult novels very well. The first book they published has already won a couple of awards!
There are three books I’d like to highlight today, with more great books to anticipate in the months to come.
First, the award-winning The Bubble Who Would Not Pop! This is a sweet story about a bubble on a mission! I love how it reimagines bubble-blowing in light of prayer. Because it’s accessible (and the illustrations are adorable), the lesson learned at the end — that God knows our hearts better than we know them ourselves—is one kids will remember and be able to take with them throughout their days.
Next, for slightly older readers, Teeny Sweeney and the Mustache Cash. Tina “Teeny” Sweeney is a delightful character who puts the “spunk” in “spunky.” She has a lot of ideas (which don’t always turn out so great), but what I love most is the family dynamic in the book. Often in stories for young readers, families are broken or dysfunctional. That’s real, and as such it ought to be represented in fiction. But close-knit, loving families are a real thing, too, and I love the way Teeny’s parents interact with Teeny and with each other. This would be great to give to a young solo reader or to read together with a kid who likes to giggle.
Finally — oh my goodness, I can’t wait for you to read this one — Launch. Superheroes? Yes, please. Told from multiple points of view, this YA novel follows a group of teens with secret abilities as they participate in a snazzy conference hosted by a social media giant. There’s lots of talk of having an impact and changing the world, but no one knows exactly what they’re trying to change. ... Good luck trying to put this one down! The story twists and turns, and will leave you yearning for Book 2 (currently on my desk!).
Little Lamb Books is doing such great work, and I’m so honored to be part of the team that’s getting these great books out into the world and into the hands of young readers. I hope you’ll give some of these a try and let me know what you think in the comments!
