I am a mom, and therefore I also consider myself a ninja. I mean, come on, how many of you have tiptoed down the hallway at night, in order keep the floor from creaking? Who can relate to the rush that runs through my body as I try to stealth-like move past my kid’s bedrooms at night? How many of you know the exact spot on the hallway that creaks, and know the exact length of the stretch you'll need to make to step over it? And the feeling you have when you hit that spot is a crushing defeat, followed only by the stronger fear that you’ve woken someone up.
Every mom I know is a superhero. I’m not talking about the campaign to rally up like a mama bear, while I’m all for that. I mean, we literally have superhero powers. How many of us have made an amazing dinner after looking in the refrigerator and pantry and determining "there’s nothing to eat?"
How many of you have made your child a costume for a class presentation, turning him into some sort of turn-of-the-century colonial explorer, after only finding out at 3 PM that the class presentation is tomorrow?
How many of you have been woken up in the middle of the night by a child covered in throw-up, and within 10 minutes had your child bathed, put the dirty sheets in the washing machine, remade the bed, had your child in clean pajamas, and had them already tucked back in their bed?
What about activities? Have you ever taken the kids from the dentist to a soccer game and then onto a birthday party? It’s one thing to take them to all these events, and it’s another level of amazing when you’ve packed soccer clothes, party clothes, bought a present and packed a lunch so your kids could eat between events.
One of my favorite mom-movie moments is from "One Fine Day." Michelle Pfeiffer goes to drop her son off at daycare and realizes it’s superhero costume day at school. Without skipping a beat, she begins rummaging through her purse, and in no time has created a superhero costume from the items in her purse. George Clooney, who plays opposite her in the film, stares in shock and disbelief and can only stumble out the words, “Where do you get a bag like that?”
When people doubt my ability to do something hard and then ask how I was able to do it, I usually respond with, “I’m a mom. It's my superpower: enough said."
