"Secret Agent Man" by Jake Frost (CatholicMom.com) Harris & Ewing, photographer [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons[/caption]In the midst of our back-to-school preparations I was running errands with my kids: school supplies, clothes, shoes, haircuts, etc. Moving from store to store I chatted with clerks and cashiers as we went. At one stop I shared a laugh with a clerk over some idle bit of humor in the midst of our consultation on available sizes, and when he left to get something from a back room my six-year-old leaned forward and said: “Dad, you’re like a secret agent. You’re really old and wheezy, but you go around and everyone just thinks you’re a regular middle-aged guy.” Now that was a laugh-out-louder. And it put a smile on my face for the whole day. Because, believe it or not, you reach a point in life when the words "you don’t look a day over 45!" bring cheer to your heart. And I’ve reached that point. So my heart was cheered. I’m not so sure about the “old and wheezy” part, but I’ll focus on the second half of the sentence. Which is a great spiritual lesson: wishful thinking makes for a happy life. No, wait, that’s not it. Pardon me while I have a senior moment. Oh yes, now I remember: the Bible says: “Do not give heed to all the things that men say, lest you hear your servant cursing you; your heart knows that many times you have yourself cursed others.” (Ecclesiastes 7: 21-22) I wish it hadn’t taken me as many years as it has to recognize the wisdom in those words, but I guess you’re never too old and wheezy to learn something new!
