In our modern society, Christmas often has nothing to do with Christ. Even the vast majority of children’s Christmas stories are about anything but the coming of our world’s Savior. In most of them you’ll see presents, snowmen, Santa, decorations, reindeer, food, parties ... but Jesus is nowhere in sight. Even when authors tell the story of Jesus’ birth, they often fail to mention the importance of why He came to earth. These books end up presenting Christ’s birth as just an interesting birth story.
So it is refreshing to see in The First Christmas that, not only is the birth of Jesus front and center, but it also includes how His birth was foretold, and that He came for our salvation. It’s nice to have a theologically accurate story to read for Christmas time.
A word to those who have easily distracted kids, though. Some of the illustrations are silly: people in the town wrestling, a man sticking out his tongue, things like that. Some kids might focus on those images and miss part of the important message of this story.
Overall, The First Christmas is a good option for anyone who wants to share the story of Christ’s birth with their little one.
