Leslea Wahl reviews The Sacraments in Action, a graphic novel that shows teenagers living their faith.

The Sacraments in Action by Sophia Institute Press

Review:

I’ve enjoyed The Saints Chronicles graphic novel collection by Sophia Press, so when I discovered they offered a similar book about the sacraments, I was anxious to check it out. This graphic novel provides an interesting look at the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Communion. Through short stories about fictional teen characters, these elements of faith are brought to life.

This quick read follows the characters of Hannah and Andy through three short stories. The stories show the characters living their faith and encouraging others to do so as well. Sacraments are part of our spiritual journey and should form who we are. They are meant to enhance our lives, not just be programs we feel obligated to attend. As we learn more about our faith, our very lives should reflect the Christian values that we hold dear, and that is what these stories show, teens who proclaim their faith through their daily actions.

The Sacraments in Action is a unique way to teach foundations of Catholicism and could be a great resource for anyone who has questions about these sacramental pillars of our faith.

Sacraments in Action

Summary:

Join in the adventures of young Catholics Hannah and Andy as they learn that a good life requires a solid faith and that God has given us the sacraments to guide and sustain us along the way.

This graphic novel's vivid images and engaging stories will captivate you even as you learn along the way, and without effort, about Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion.

Activities at the end of each story will help fix in your mind and heart the meanings of these three powerful sacraments.

Along with Hannah and Andy, you'll learn:

  • How Baptism frees us from sin.
  • Why babies wear white baptismal gowns.
  • The vital role of godparents.
  • Why water, chrism, and candles are used during a Baptism.
  • How Confirmation prepares us to share our faith with others.
  • What the Holy Spirit has to do with Confirmation.
  • How Confirmation helps us to serve God with our actions.
  • Why we have Confirmation sponsors.
  • Why we receive the Eucharist at Mass.
  • How we are empowered by Christ in the Eucharist.
  • How the bread and wine are transformed into Christ's Body and Blood at Mass.
  • What it means to be a part of the Body of Christ.
  • How good friendships help us grow in love of God.

And much more to ignite your faith and bring it vividly to life!
