A Rosary for Every Heart

It seemed as if the rosary beads seldom left my mother’s hands when I was a little girl.
Anne Vitale was devoted to her daily Rosary, a prayerful habit she passed along to her two daughters. I am so grateful that my mother instilled in me a love of both the Blessed Mother and the prayer form she inspired.
I have had the privilege of writing about the way we can live out the Mysteries in our own lives through a series of books with Marian Press, the first of which was Joyful Encounters with Mary. The process of writing about Mary brought home to me the loving guidance she provides as she leads us in prayer.
But I am thrilled to know that there is a new method for praying the Rosary, based upon one’s spirituality. In her book A Rosary for Every Heart: Meditations in Four Spiritual Styles talented author Jennessa Terraccino offers a blueprint for meditating on the Mysteries according to one’s particular sensibilities.

A Meaningful Guide
Jennessa offers readers a spirituality and temperament quiz which reveals their spirituality styles. I took the quiz and was pleasantly surprised to find out that I am Augustinian in my spirituality. That is linked to being “imaginative, hopeful, seeing Scripture as personal dialogue” and “having an intimate relationship with God.” It is connected with the Sanguine temperament of being joyful, expressive, and optimistic.
Since Pope Leo XIV is an Augustinian, I feel a new bond with him, thanks to this revelation about my spirituality. It has also helped me to bridge the gap with the Lord, finding new ways to connect with Him. It has been said that it is difficult to know God until one knows the self. Gaining knowledge about my natural affinity to the Augustinian spiritual style has helped me on my walk with the Almighty.
Other Spiritual Styles
In addition to illuminating the Augustinian approach, Jennessa explains three other options: Ignatian, Thomistic, and Franciscan. The Ignatian style is “practical, responsible, rooted in discernment and order,” and “grounded in the liturgical year.” Meanwhile, the Thomistic method is “logical, truth seeking, orderly” and “striving to understand faith deeply.” Finally, the Franciscan style is “joyful, free, spontaneous, seeing God in creation” and “celebrating His love.”
These other styles are also linked to particular temperaments. Ignatians tend to be Melancholic, meaning they are “serious, faithful, reflective.” Thomistic individuals are frequently Choleric: “determined, bold, loving challenges.” And the Franciscans embody the Phlegmatic: “peaceful, harmony loving, steady.”
Helpful Reflections
Jennessa then provides reflections on each Mystery of the Rosary, based on the individual spiritual styles. I found this to be immensely helpful and refreshing as I pondered the life experiences of Jesus and His mother Mary. It helped to re-energize my recitation of the Rosary, giving the prayer practice more meaning for me.
Each reflection is grounded in the Word of God. The scriptural references help to provide a firm foundation for each point of meditation. For instance, in an Augustinian reflection on the first Joyful Mystery, the Annunciation, Jennessa writes:
Mary is your Mother, and you can ask her to help you to be brave enough to say yes to whatever Jesus desires for you. Ultimately, pursuing His plan over yours will bring you peace. God won’t force His Will on you. He respects your freedom to say no. As your Father, He knows what the most ideal role and roads are for you. (93)
So much wisdom is packed into that passage! It had never occurred to me before to seek the Blessed Mother’s aid in summoning up the courage to do the will of Christ. It is a powerful reminder of how reliance on Mary can help us in living out our divine purpose.
