Samantha Stephenson offers three ways to see our homes in light of heaven.
Homemaking is more than just a set of tasks or chores. It is a noble and sacred vocation that reflects the love of God and the dignity of human life. As Catholic moms, we are called to make our homes places of beauty, order, hospitality, and grace. We are also called to make our homes domestic churches, where we and our families can grow in faith, hope, and charity.
But how can we embrace the dignity and spirituality of homemaking in our busy and hectic lives? How can we see our homes as gifts from God and means to sanctification? Here are some insights and tips to help you with this challenge.
See your home as a reflection of heaven.
Our homes are not just physical structures, but spiritual realities. They are meant to be foreshadowings of our eternal home, where we will dwell with God and His saints. Therefore, we should strive to make our homes places that reflect the beauty, goodness, and truth of God.
We can do this by decorating our homes with holy images, icons, statues, and sacramentals. We can also do this by filling our homes with music, literature, art, and culture that uplift our souls and inspire our minds. We can also do this by keeping our homes clean, tidy, and organized, as a sign of respect and gratitude for God’s gifts.
See your home as a school of love.
Our homes are not just places of comfort and convenience, but places of formation and education. They are where we and our children learn the most important lessons of life, such as how to love God, how to love ourselves, and how to love our neighbors. Therefore, we should strive to make our homes places that foster love, joy, and peace.
We can do this by praying together as a family, especially the Rosary, the Mass, and the Divine Office. We can also do this by celebrating together the liturgical seasons, feasts, and sacraments. We can also do this by serving together the needs of our family, our friends, and our community.
See your home as a mission field.
Our homes are not just places of rest and relaxation, but places of witness and evangelization. They are where we and our children encounter God’s presence and action in our lives, and where we share His love and mercy with others. Therefore, we should strive to make our homes places that radiate God’s light and grace.
We can do this by inviting others into our homes, such as relatives, neighbors, friends, and strangers. We can also do this by reaching out to others from our homes, such as through phone calls, letters, emails, or social media. We can also do this by offering our homes to God, such as by consecrating them to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
These are some of the ways that we can see the dignity and spirituality of homemaking as Catholic moms. They are not meant to be exhaustive or exclusive, but to inspire and encourage us to make our homes more than just houses, but temples of God.
Home is where we are restored, where we find ourselves, and where we find God. It is where we can most be ourselves and where we live out our destiny. (Theology of Home: Finding the Eternal in the Everyday)
