Andrea Vij leads a tour of six AI-powered apps developed by Catholics for Catholics.

It’s not going away, my friends. Like it or not, artificial intelligence (AI) has thrown us into a technological revolution that demands a response. In May of this year, Pope Leo rose to the occasion with his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, outlining the risks of AI and describing it as “a valuable tool that requires vigilance.”

For many of us, vigilance will take the form of knowing what’s available and how we may or may not wish to use it — not to mention whether we should or shouldn’t.

A Special Responsibility

In basic terms, artificial intelligence refers to the ability of machines to imitate human reasoning — a slippery slope, to say the least. Some would argue that given its capacity for misuse, Catholics have a special responsibility to lead the way in using AI for good. This article looks at six AI-powered apps that seek to do just that.

Developed by Catholics for Catholics, these apps can benefit anyone who seeks truth from a Catholic perspective. Each offers an answer engine, or chatbot, to field questions, but in contrast to resources like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, the apps reviewed here pledge complete fidelity to Catholic teaching.

Before looking at each one individually, we should remind ourselves of an important boundary: While artificial intelligence can help us grow in our faith, it must never be viewed as a substitute for human interaction or participation in the sacramental life of the Church. Even the most impressive apps are merely tools, and we must use them with discernment.

Magisterium AI

Magisterium AI logoWhen it comes to AI for Catholics, Magisterium AI sets the standard. Anchored by a reliable and user-friendly answer engine, this app offers a wealth of other features you didn’t even know you needed: Catholic news, a saints database, worldwide diocesan statistics, a quiz generator, help writing your homily, daily Scripture readings, a Confession guide, encyclicals, novenas, chaplets — all in multiple languages.

With a curated library of over 32,000 Catholic texts, Magisterium AI promises not only complete alignment with Church teaching, but incomparable depth. Ask, for example, “What is faith?” and you’ll get a multifaceted answer with clickable links to the Catechism. Ask for perspectives on faith from the saints and you’ll get brief summaries from Augustine, Aquinas, Thérèse of Lisieux and others, with clickable citations.

As a tool for scholars, researchers, parents, or anyone who seeks thorough answers, Magisterium AI stands out. A free tier offers limited features, while individual subscriptions cost $29.99/year. Group subscriptions are available.

Credo Chat

Credo Chat AI logoEfficient and approachable, Credo Chat offers a “less-is-more” experience for users who want reliable information without a lot of bells and whistles. Ask the chatbot a question and you’ll quickly get a clear and concise answer followed by a “Deeper Insights” tab that offers more detail, including citations. From the simplest answers to the most complex, everything is rooted in Scripture, the Catechism, and a wealth of curated Magisterial documents.

Credo Chat also offers daily Mass readings, a Rosary tool, and a library that includes traditional prayers, Stations of the Cross, and basic guides to Confession, Adoration, and Benediction. Its Mass finder, sourced from online bulletins, invites users to make updates to schedules in their area — a potential service project for older kids!

User-friendly throughout, Credo Chat’s uncluttered approach makes it a good option for beginners, young adults, new Catholics, or anyone seeking an accessible AI experience. Best of all, its founder, a father of five, is committed to keeping this well-designed app completely free.

Acutis AI

Acutis AI logoRelative newcomer Acutis AI puts the emphasis on family by offering controls that allow parents to monitor their children’s use of AI. Inspired by Saint Carlo Acutis, the app’s developers hope to help young people “learn to use AI responsibly, think well, and live lives rooted in truth.”

Acutis AI’s chatbot draws answers from reliable Catholic sources to provide clear responses with linked citations. The app also offers an AI-generated movie guide with Catholic moral analysis, a widget for daily news and inspiration, and an image generator that helps users create posters, coloring pages, illustrations, and more.

As of this writing, a number of Acutis AI’s features are listed as “coming soon.” We can safely assume that the developers, with Saint Carlo’s blessing, are working overtime to build this app into a go-to resource for Catholic families.

Acutis AI’s free tier offers limited features. Family subscriptions begin at $22/month with school plans available.

Catholic AI

Catholic AI logoWith a chatbot, Mass finder, and user-friendly Rosary guide, Catholic AI offers a number of reliable features, but what really sets it apart is its verse-by-verse Bible study. This unique tool, available to both members and non-members, allows the user to locate any verse from Scripture and click on the text for an explanation rooted in the commentaries of Saint Thomas Aquinas and the Church Fathers. For anyone seeking quick and trustworthy insights, this is an excellent resource.

Paying members can use the same click to request AI-generated images illustrating the selected verse, or they can turn to the app’s music generator to create faith-based music with prompts. While some may wince at the idea of AI-generated voices singing AI-generated lyrics, features like this, when employed with discernment, can enhance the devotional practices of those who use them.

Outstanding for Bible study, Catholic AI offers a limited free tier with full membership at $9.99/month.

Magis AI

Magis AI logoDeveloped by the Magis Center of Reason and Faith, Magis AI is a one-of-a-kind resource that draws exclusively from the published works of the Magis Center’s president, Father Robert Spitzer, host of Father Spitzer’s Universe on EWTN.

Although geared primarily toward the intersection of science, reason, and faith, the app’s answer engine can field questions on any topic from the most challenging to the most basic. While answers automatically default to advanced, they can be calibrated to any level from 5th grade to PhD.

For example, say or type, “I’m 12 years old. Why do my parents make me go to Mass?” The app will “think” for a moment before spinning out an age-appropriate answer that any Catholic parent would love — and having been generated from the writings of Father Spitzer, it will have his endearing disposition all over it.

For your next question, you can request a post-graduate perspective on the theological implications of quantum theory (if you’re into that sort of thing) and the app will deliver on that, too.

With a number of features still in development, Magis AI promises a great future, and this innovative app is completely free.

Truthly

Truthly AI logoBacked by a roster of well-known Catholic influencers, Truthly seeks to transform your life, and the app’s founders hope you will use it not only as an AI tool, but a comprehensive daily faith resource.

Truthly encourages users to “live boldly,” offering a variety of motivational aids to make that possible: daily challenges, Scripture insights, a helpful chatbot, video courses, prayers, and even a joke for the day. But this is only a sampling, and users will need time to explore the app’s full range.

One notable feature is the Morning Offering tool, which provides personalized AI prompts that guide the user in creating a customized prayer for the day. This type of interaction is key to the Truthly experience and the founders’ goal to form a real, in-person community of believers. This is an app that goes beyond chat to lifestyle, and anyone seeking a resource with a “daily faith coach” aura should give it a try.

Truthly offers a free 7-day trial with subscriptions at $39.99/year.
