Anne DeSantis outlines three strategies for preventing hurt within the family.
In family life, avoiding hurt seems like an impossible task because as humans we have feelings, interactions, and not-so-good days. However, there are ways we can avoid hurt with the help of our faith and with God’s help and our prayers. Here they are:
Listening
The number-one way to avoid hurt in family living is to learn to be a better listener. Listening enables us to not only hear what the other person has to say, but also to let God act in between the dialogue. When words are harsh and virtue is diminishing at the moment, listening helps to be able to understand better the important aspects and the heart of the other person sharing. Being slow to speak but prompt in listening helps us to make wise decisions and to give our best answer when conversations are tense.
Humility
Humility is a virtue which helps to avoid family hurt during difficult discussions. Just as listening helps us to slow down and focus, humility invites the Lord into the picture so that we can understand better how to bring healing to the tenseness of a family argument or difficulty. Humility is how we imitate Christ in all situations to be better people and to bring God’s love to our family life.
Prayer
When we pray, we are also inviting Jesus to be a part of our solution. As He is our guide, prayer is the way to find a solution to sadness, difficulty, and hurt. Pray that you will avoid hurt in your family and in your life in general through prayer in the greatest of ways. Intercede to Mary and to the saints in avoiding hurt. Day by day, moment by moment, you will find the peace you and your family need in bringing more love and in avoiding the hurts of the day.
